Choose Sri Lanka's coast first by your travel month, then by the kind of stay you want and the rest of your route. The south suits a journey that includes Galle and several different coastal stops. The east offers beach bases around Trincomalee and Pasikuda, with Arugam Bay a distinct choice for a surf-focused stay.
For broad seasonal planning, favour the south and southwest around December–March and consider the east during May–September. Transition months need more care, and conditions vary by beach. A region being in season does not guarantee suitable sea conditions on the day.
The south: choose your base, not just the region
Galle gives a southern stay a cultural anchor, with its fort and streets to explore. Weligama, Mirissa and Tangalle offer different coastal settings. Decide whether you want time in town, surfing, a hotel-centred beach stay or a mixture, then choose a base around those priorities.
Avoid expecting every southern beach to feel the same. Check the exact setting of the property: on a beach or inland, close to a town or more secluded. A sea view does not necessarily mean direct beach access, and an attractive beach is not automatically a suitable swimming beach.

The east: different places for different holidays
Trincomalee pairs coastal time with the town's harbour, temples and fort; Nilaveli and Uppuveli are nearby beach bases. Pasikuda is a separate choice farther south, with a bay suited to a holiday centred on the beach and hotel. Arugam Bay, farther southeast, is especially associated with surfing.
Choose the place that fits your purpose rather than treating these names as interchangeable. Ask about the immediate surroundings, dining options and travel needed for your planned activities. Adding several eastern bases can use up time that you intended to spend by the sea.

What the seasonal pattern means
Sri Lanka Tourism's beach guidance identifies November–March as a broadly favourable period for the southwest and explains how the southwest winds favour eastern waters. Its climate guide places the southwest monsoon in May–September and the northeast monsoon in December–February.
March–April and October–November are inter-monsoon periods. The climate guide notes afternoon thunderstorms in the first and potentially heavy island-wide showers in the second. Treat the month ranges as a starting point, then check the current forecast and conditions for the actual coast.
For swimming, surfing or a boat trip, check local advice, warning flags and the operator's assessment on the day. Do not infer safety from a seasonal guide or from a bay looking calm. Keep an alternative activity available when sea conditions change.
Match the coast to the whole journey
The south is a practical option to consider after a route through the hill country or a southern wildlife park. Trincomalee or Pasikuda can make sense after the Cultural Triangle. Ask for a route that shows actual hotel-to-hotel transfers and the final journey to your departure airport.
For a seven- or ten-day trip, choose one coast unless visiting both is a particular priority. Combining south and east is possible with more time, but adds a substantial change of region. Give each stop enough nights to justify the journey and do not assume both coasts share their best conditions.
If the coast is the main purpose of the holiday, spend your extra nights in one well-chosen base. If the beach is a short final chapter, choose the region that fits your month and route with the least disruption.
Make the choice personal
Before choosing, decide whether you most want swimming, surfing, cultural outings, restaurants within easy reach or quiet time at a property. Include the ages and interests of your party, and how many nights you can give the coast.
