Choose Yala when your Sri Lanka holiday already connects the southeast with the southern coast. Consider Wilpattu when the northwest or Anuradhapura is a main part of your route. The better choice depends on your dates, interests and available nights, with enough time to enjoy the safari between transfers.
If seeing a leopard is your main reason for going, say so at the planning stage, but treat it as a possibility. Neither a private jeep nor a costly lodge can guarantee a sighting. This comparison focuses on choosing and booking the safari, including the practical details to settle before you pay.
Yala and Wilpattu: the practical comparison
Yala is in southeast Sri Lanka, making it a candidate for a journey from the hill country towards the southern coast. Wilpattu is in the northwest, making it a candidate for a route through Anuradhapura. For either park, check the particular entrance, lodge location and hotel-to-hotel transfer before deciding it fits.
Sri Lanka Tourism describes forests and wetlands on its Yala National Park page. Its Wilpattu National Park page describes the northwest park’s distinctive natural lakes, known as villus. These landscape differences are useful starting points; they do not establish a visitor’s likelihood of seeing a particular animal.
Which park fits a first private Sri Lanka holiday?
For a route including the hill country, wildlife and Galle or another southern base, start by testing Yala against your available nights. Allow time to reach the correct park entrance. Lodges in the wider Yala area do not all have the same access or the same transfer to a drive.
For a trip built around Anuradhapura or the northwest, test Wilpattu first. Travelling south solely for a safari and then returning north can consume days you wanted for wildlife. If the east coast is your priority, compare the complete route and the month rather than assuming either park is the obvious choice.
See The Island Loop for a southern route reference, or The Northern Wild for a journey including Wilpattu and northern regions. Both can be adapted to your priorities.
Is Yala or Wilpattu better for leopards?
Both are places to look for Sri Lankan leopards. Sri Lanka Tourism highlights Yala’s importance for leopard conservation and identifies leopards among Wilpattu’s wildlife. This does not establish a guaranteed outcome for a visitor, or a percentage chance of success for one drive.
Ask about the assigned guide, the time allocated to the park and conditions for your dates. Give space to habitats, birds and other wildlife as well. If the experience only counts as successful with one photograph of one species, adjust that expectation before booking.
A private jeep gives your party its own vehicle, not exclusive access to the park. Ask how the operator handles busy sightings and what happens if joining a cluster would compromise responsible viewing. Decide whether patient observation matters more to you than rushing between reports.
How many nights should you allow?
Two nights near one park are a useful planning starting point: arrive, settle in and keep a dedicated safari period before moving on. This is an itinerary recommendation, not an entry requirement. Depending on arrival time and your interests, you may want more than one drive; confirm the actual schedule.
One night can work in a tighter route, but ask to see the whole timetable. A long drive to the lodge, a pre-dawn safari and another substantial transfer leave little rest. With children or travellers who prefer a slower pace, decide how long everyone wants to spend in a jeep before choosing a full-day outing.
If wildlife is the main purpose of your holiday, consider a longer stay or several parks with travel time between them. The Cat Tour provides a wildlife route reference. For a broader holiday, one well-planned park stay can be enough.
What should a private safari quote include?
Confirm that the jeep is exclusive to your party, its passenger capacity, the drive duration and the roles of the driver, park tracker and any additional naturalist. Ask which entrance or area is planned, who handles permits, and whether entrance fees, taxes, lodge transfers and meals are included.
The Department of Wildlife Conservation states that national-park visits require permits subject to its conditions and prescribed fees. Confirm current arrangements for your date instead of relying on an old ticket price or opening schedule.
Ask about a vehicle breakdown, rain or changed access, and agree the alternative and any refund terms in writing. Luxury accommodation and safari guiding are different parts of the purchase; choosing a lodge does not define the guiding provided.
Make your viewing preferences explicit: patience, space around animals and compliance with park instructions. Do not request feeding, pursuit or a closer approach for a photograph. Let your guide know that leaving an unsuitable situation is preferable to forcing a sighting.
Can you visit Yala or Wilpattu in December and January?
Assess safari conditions separately from the beach season. Sri Lanka Tourism notes that Yala receives much of its rain during the northeast monsoon. A promising season for the southwest coast therefore does not guarantee dry safari tracks. Check current conditions and authorised access for either park before finalising the stay.
Avoid choosing from an annual “best month” chart alone. Rainfall, track conditions and park management decisions can affect the experience. Ask the planner to check the intended dates and explain what would change if the original drive could not operate.

Plan a safari around the holiday you want
Share your month, available nights, onward route, party ages and comfort needs. Say whether photography, birding or a general introduction to wildlife matters most, and how many drives you would enjoy. These details make a more useful brief than simply asking for the most famous park.
Serendria designs private journeys with transport, properties and experiences set out for your trip. Discuss a private Sri Lanka safari and we can help decide whether Yala, Wilpattu or a different wildlife stop best fits your plans.
